GB Pixel Art Jam 2024 Submission
A downloadable Pixel Art
CHUG - CHUG - CHUG - CHUUUUUG!!!!
New chord unlocked! It's the greatest grunge-rock GB platformer in the world!
Welcome to the grungy world of punk rock, slammed into a beautiful 8-bit platformer. Jam your way through levels with the powers provided by a vast array of rock-out instruments, and save the world from the mediocre has-beens who should've quit playing back in high school. Put your shirt back on, loser!
90s schoolyard legends say that only the true hero can master all of the chords. Could you become the ultimate dude?!
Or that's what this game would be, if it had ever existed. This is just a single screenshot created for the GB Pixel Art Jam 2024, using the 'Blood Tide' four-colour palette. Sorry gamers, I do plain old pixel art sometimes too! (but feel free to check out my other projects if you want to actually play something!)
This is not the greatest grunge-rock GB platformer in the world. This is just a tribute.

Great work, the palette was a good choice, works really well.
Thank you! Tbh the maroon was a little tricky but I'm glad it seems to hit the right mark for people.
Wow that definetly looks like a screenshot taken straight out of a GB game! You nailed the retro aesthetic, it is very faithful!
Good choice of colours too, I think you picked the right palette for this 👍
Great work!
Thanks so much! I was really pleased with how the characters turned out - I took a lot of inspiration from Zelda for the UI bar as well so I'm glad it translated 😅
Your pixel art concept is great, good job! I'm glad to see more people taking advantage of this palette, especially when the use is also good.
As others have said, it would be great to see a game with your art style someday. I think you'd have a lot of luck trying out the Game Boy game engines (like: GBDK or GB Studio)
Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad so many people feel inspired by the idea of this game from just a single picture!
I'd love to give that a go, most of my game dev projects have been in GMS2 so it would be quite a change of pace to retro build a game for the GB. Maybe I'll try it out on a future project 😅
Fantastic!
Thanks I'm glad you like it!
Looking forward to hearing the grunge chip tunes! Great stuff.
I'm a little tempted to make some now... 👀
This is so rad, love the distortion!
Thanks so much! Do you mean the font? It didn't lend itself super well to the restrictions of this art style, but I wanted the text to feel sketchy to capture those 90s-00s punk rocker/Scott Pilgrim vibes. I think in the end it was worth the unique tiles!
I love the speakers :)
Thank you! I actually almost didn't manage to include the speakers, but I rejigged a bunch and got the tile count down further than I needed and was able to add them back in. Tile count is capped at 192 as it is now!
Aww yess I also had a lot of problems last year with tilesets. The isometric room is much easier because the background is low tilesets...
That's a good point... I've done a lot of isometric before so I was considering that but avoided it because I thought it would be too difficult withthe restrictions. But of course whole chunks of the canvas are left empty! 🤷🤦
Really cool aesthetic, like others said I would’ve loved to play this for real!
Thanks for the kind words! It would certainly make for a rocking adventure!
I think that you made a very cool game concept with this art piece! I would definitely want to play this game on a gameboy. The color palette was a good choice for this! Thank you for making it.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you liked the game concept 🙂
I kind of really want an 8-bit chip toon rockband game now. Love the idea!
I would definitely want to play it! Thanks!
